General BA Taylor University - History/Political Science MA Ball State University - World History Ed. D Mississippi State University High School As a player, he was elected captain of his outstanding Morton H.S. (Hammond, Indiana) team and had the opportunity to play with five professional drafts including his close friend Darrel Chaney who spent 11 years in the "big leagues" with Cincinnati and Atlanta. College As a four year letterman at Taylor University (Upland, Indiana), he was named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team as the "Trojans" finished 5th in the nation at the NAIA World Series after four regional tournament appearances. After his playing career was over, he served as assistant coach at his Alma Mater under Jack King, the father of the former "big leaguer" Jeff King. High School Coaching During his 13 year high school coaching career, Dr. Sumner guided Eastbrook HS (Marion, Indiana) to a record of 250 and 111 with 22 Conference, tournament or league championships including a state record winning streak (at that time) of 24 games in 1973. He won 8 local and regional "Coach of the Year" awards and was twice nominated as a candidate for "Indiana HS Coach of the Year" by the state coaches association. While at Eastbrook, he also coached football and basketball with a combined record of 133 and 43 in those two sports. Mississippi State University During his three years working with Ron Polk at Mississippi State, the "Bulldogs" made the NCAA regional finals in 1983 and 1984, won the regional and the SEC championship in 1985 and went on to finish 3rd in the College World Series that same year. The 1985 team included former major league stars Rafael Palmeiro, Jeff Brantley, Will Clark and Bobby Thigpen. While coaching at MSU, Dr. Sumner worked with hitters, infielders and coached first base. He also established the "Bulldogs Baseball" Chapel program for players, coaches and staff. Dr. Sumner wrote an article on vision, helmets, and hitting for Collegiate Baseball Monthly written in 1985 and reprinted in March of 2001. Parent As a parent, Dr. Sumner served for several years as president of the Germantown HS Baseball Booster Club where his three sons played over a span of 10 years in the highly successful and nationally recognized program. During that period, the "Red Devils" won the National Championship in 1995 with a perfect 38-0 record. Two of his sons were voted as "Most Valuable Offensive Player" three times during those years and both went on to receive scholarships at the Division I level. Dr. Sumner's Philosophy on Hitting: Sometimes, you may feel that there are as many different ideas about hitting and what certain hitters should do as there are snowflakes. Do this...do that...move here...move there...over and over...different opinions. After all, many students of the game feel that hitting may well be the most difficult thing to do in sports. The 30% success ratio of an "outstanding" hitter adds fuel to that idea. Why? Because the .300 hitter fails 7 out of 10 times at bat! There is an answer that fits. One that's adjustable and repeatable. One that the individual can use to identify mistakes and work to correct them. It's based on the theory that hitting is basically common sense and physics. It's a system that provides continuous solutions. It's a system that is understandable and can be applied over and over to gain a consistent approach. It's a set of rules and adjustments based on direction and feel. It's a system that provides answers when things are "slipping away" and "at bats" are losing their effectiveness. This approach combines the three essentials that all great hitters can't afford to be without. It's not a band-aid. What is taught is personally taught with concern and care! This approach is neither "cookie cutter" nor "assembly line"...it's personal and it focuses on far more than the physical. It's a platform...a basis...a package...a firm and understandable set of principles...that works for all ages in baseball and softball!
